151 attempts. An impressive number, given the weather we had this week. What started out as a rough and snowy segment, quickly turned to ice early and then became extremely tough to ride with the Wednesday snow. In fact, this was the case for nearly all the trails in the area. As the snow came, it was a rare scenario – light and fluffy snow with seemingly no moisture in it – brushing away like sawdust, revealing hard-packed ice underneath. Not only did this make it hard to navigate the trail, it made traction far less predictable – even with studs. Weather conditions in the middle of the week didn’t leave much (or any) room to attempt the segment. It wasn’t until the weekend that things started to get a bit better, but still far from ideal. A heart-felt kudos to all the guys and gals who rode this week. BMN is a great segment when it’s right, however extremely challenging when it’s not.
With that said and touching back to the conditions of the trails in the area, the decision has been made to forego the final/eighth round and call it a series. All the trails in the area are a coat of snow with hard ice underneath and it’s just not safe for the whole group. While some of our riders enjoy this kind of challenge, the upcoming weather warm-up this week is simply going to make a mess of things. Plans for next year’s series already include starting earlier (December) to allow added time to host segments and work around the weather as needed.
Thank you to everyone who participated this year. This little series has grown from last year and it’s been great to see. The people, the bikes, the nature, the comradery.. all of it. So thank you, again.
